Schedule Slip

Sorry, guys. Was running a little dry on inspiration and then got addicted to a new video game. I don't really have anything for "yesterday's" post. So, um... here's a crappy something I wrote for class. It's Guardian-related.

EXT. NEW YORK CITY CRIME SCENE – NIGHT

We see RUBY CALLAGHAN, a young detective, close the door of a marked police vehicle and step carefully onto the sidewalk. She stays by the vehicle for a few long moments, as if pondering something unrelated to the scene before her. She refocuses when another officer, REESE EVANS, enters the shot.

REESE
Callaghan! We’ve all been waiting for you—where were you?

RUBY
I’m sorry. Caught me in the middle of some other research I was doing. You can’t wait a few minutes?

REESE
Well… normally, this is—

RUBY senses that something strange is going on. She gestures for REESE to stop talking.

RUBY
Don’t beat around the bush. Give me the story from the top.

With that, RUBY takes a step forward and REESE follows. He seems reluctant as he begins the story.

REESE
All right… we received an anonymous 9-1-1 call at about… 7:15? Anyway, same deal as the other in the serial case we’ve been working on. That makes seven, right?

RUBY nods slowly, staring at her feet. REESE gives ample time for her to reply, but none comes. He continues.

REESE
Well, if you’re right about this, this should be the last one. Only—the victim isn’t dead.

RUBY suddenly stops, staring intently at the other officer. He stops, too.

RUBY
What? (A beat.) But that doesn’t make—

REESE
He’s just like the other victims. Gunpowder burns on the back of his neck. Kid was shot point blank.

RUBY
How do you—

REESE
Kid’s a superhuman, Callaghan.

This latest news seems to hit RUBY hard; she rub her temples and looks away. This latest development changes the battle against these serial murders.

RUBY
Are you sure?

REESE
Not quite yet. But—that’s what the kid’s told us so far, and it matches up with his survival. No human should have survived a shot like that. The lab will be testing his DNA for confirmation soon. (Noticing RUBY’s apparent distress, he adds:) You all right?

RUBY
(Ponders, takes a deep breath before answering.) Yeah, I’ll be fine. I just… wasn’t expecting this.

REESE
I don’t think anyone was. (A beat.) So… what’s the next step?

RUBY
We need to talk to the victim. He’s a living witness now; he might have changed the game, but he can also solve it. When’s the soonest they can bring him in for questioning?

REESE
Probably not until tomorrow morning. I got a few answers from him tonight, but he’s really freaked. We have to wait.

RUBY nods slowly.
