(Note: I'd also like to go back and rewrite the first bio, as the character's history has changed. I'll do that on another day where I don't have free time.)
Anna Jessica Langsley was born into an unusual lifestyle during a turbulent period of history. Both of her parents had superhuman abilities; her father could manipulate pure energy and her mother could utilize sound as a weapon. However, they lived in a time period where superhumanity was treated like inhumanity, and for a very long time they kept their abilities secret.
When Anna was twelve, the first superhuman vigilante ever became active in the state of New York. After an uphill battle against various prejudices, superhumans eventually became accepted as superheroes (although not quite yet as ordinary citizens, but those are what secret identities are for). The adult Langsleys immediately sprang into action, becoming a formidable crime-fighting duo. They were active for about two years and gained a fair amount of fame before moving to a notoriously crime-ridden city best known as "Nightmare City."
They often cooperated with the police and attempted to do so with the NMCPD, but once again the force flagrantly demonstrated their incompetence. One officer, who had apparently never been taught gun safety, used his weapon as a pointer and accidentally shot and killed Mr. and Mrs. Langsley. He then used the gun to scratch his chin and accidentally killed himself. After the bodies had been identified, their resources were stretched so thin that an unassuming intern working at the station only for his high school senior project got the job of informing 14-year-old Anna.
Anna kind of resents most police officers. The boy who came to inform her, though, eventually became a detective. His name was Ethan Boyd, and the two had a fairly solid relationship--until, of course, Mr. Boyd started going crazy.
Anna's powers--manipulation of light, which she mainly used for illusions--began developing shortly after her parents' death. She hated her superhumanity and wanted nothing more than to live a normal life, and she tried her hardest to do just that. She graduated high school and became a private investigator. After a few years of work with relatively low success, she began using her abilities to manipulate enemies' minds and gather intelligence. She slowly embraced her powers and even took on a sort of superheroic role. All who saw this alter ego described it only as "A mystery," which she eventually took and misspelled (to make it look more French, I guess) for her official name.
And that basically takes us to present day...
